How can i take moving shoots of birds in flight and keep them in focus, as the AF focuses on the background and not on the bird? (Nikon 70-300 lens)

if i remove the AF its very hard to focus and follow the bird at the same.

Some of the pics are fine but many of them are out of focus.

i have taken some nice shots of some singing birds (not moving much) through grass and twigs with the AF turned off and they have turned out well.

i have only had the camera a month so i may be getting a bit ahead of myself!

Many Thanks

Welcome Jim :)

No harm in trying ;) But tracking birds in flight is very difficult at the best of times.

Do you use centre AF point? With this method, if you can see enough of the bird to be worth photographing, you can probably find a clear target area big enough to lock on to, but expect to focus and refocus a lot as the bird moves around, and your depth of field is probably very shallow.

With a moving target, servo AF is worth a try. It's far from being 100% reliable, but often much better than other methods.
