Yes
hi guys now about to purchase a d90, it comes with the 18-105mm lens, i was basically wondering what other lens you would suggest? i'm on a limmited budget so now pro lens please. also any other recomendations?

Depends on just how limited a budget and what you like to shoot. A lot of people seem to want a "big" lens as their second one, if that's the case with you too, then a 70-300 VR would be a good choice. Alternatively, you could go the other way and get something like a Sigma 10-20mm.

Of course if by "limited" you mean 50 quid then these might not be the best suggestions.....

I have a D90 and the 18-105 is a great lens to start with. The majority of the shots i take fall within that range. I guess it depends what you want to shoot. I bought a 70-300 shortly after but it hasn't been out of my bag much however, i dont shoot a lot of wildlife or subjects from afar. The 105 does give you that bit extra than the average kit lens.

thanks for the above guys im looking to do some motorsport and wildlife shots, budget max of 400 on next lens.. any more suggestions??

is that optically stabilised?

Nope, you need a VR lens for that. There may be something of interest in the classifieds? ;)

oh ok do sigma do any opictal stablisied lenses? as nikkor vr lenses are too expensive for my price range??

For that money it has got to be the Nikon 70-300 AF-S VR. Cracking lens that punches well above it's price tag

New is just under the £400 mark and s/h is about £300 ish.

I got mine about 3 months ago and it has hardly been of the camera. Having spent a long time looking at photo's and reviews it seems that most people who get the sigma version end up trading in for the Nikon:thinking:

Good luck

What's your budget? Sigma do the OS lenses, but reviews point to them being a mixed bag.

oh ok bout 400 for a second lens at the mo, mostly be using for nature and motorsport shots

Well there's always my VR....there's no selling outside of the classified forums, but it's in budget by a fair bit and a stormingly good lens

ive not got enuff posts to use classifieds yet, but thanks for the idea of the lens, i'll pop down to warehouse express in norwich and try it out :)

If you have a tripod, or a monopod then the Sigma 70-300 would be great. I recommend it because of the Macro function between 200-300mm.

Most, if not all of these shots I took were with the Sigma, and no tripod.

It was a very cold day, so it was quite difficult shooting at 300mm with macro but I think I did ok.

I also have the Nikon 18-200mm VR which I would also recommend although at a few focal lengths there is a significant amount of distortion. It's a great lens to use on a day-to-day basis though, I had it on all the time until I bought my 50mm. The focal length of the 18-200 probably isn't what you want though, especially for motorsport and wildlife, so I wouldn't go for it, it's not incredibly fast either at 200mm.

those photos are amazing really like them, im using a s100fs and it has nuffin on them. *** eventually like the sigma 150-500mm bit too expensive for me at mo though..

As someone above suggested, it's probably better for you to just get the D90 body on it's own so you can have more money to spend on a lens, or maybe even two.

I do really rate that Sigma though, theres better but I only got it for £60 so I jumped at the chance. It's only about £150~ new last time I checked.

go to the link i posted, there is a tamron 18-270 VC (vibration compensation, the same as VR) for less than £400 this will suit all conditions of shooting specified by you

how good are tamron lenses ive heard lots about sigma but not tamron..

I personally wouldn't get a lens with too big a zoom range as they are inevitably a compromise in zoom range over quality imho.

I found the Nikon 18-70mm a cracking lens for the money, though I got it with both the D70 and the D200, it has proved to be a high quality kit lens. When mine got damaged I decided to replace it with the Nikon 16-85mm VR which I've found to be a great lens.

When I had the D70, I had the Sigma 70-300mm APO Macro and was quite happy with the lens, and the the price. ;) However when I upgraded to the D200 the Sigma suddenly didn't seem that good, being quite soft. :( I think the jump from 6Mp to 10Mp showed up the quality of the Sigma. The D90 sensor is a generation beyond the D200, and an extra 2Mp, so may give similar results as I got with the Sigma. I replaced the Sigma with the Nikon 70-300mm VR (from Kerso I think) and that was an obvious a step up from the Sigma. I do miss the Macro setting on the Sigma though.

With the 16-85mm and the 70-300mm there is a nice overlap of zoom range between the 2. :) The 16mm at the wide end is a surprisingly big difference compared to the 18mm 0f the 18-70mm too.

cool, how much is the nikon 70-300mm vr going for can u pick them up cheap? (as in under 400)?

oh ok thats not too bad then

those 2 lenses suggested will blow your £400 budget right out of the window. and it just doesn't end. for your budget you will need to compromise on performance unfortunately.

tamron lenses in my opinions are better than sigma in terms of sharpness. i got 2 tamron lenses and 2 sigma, the tamron is much much sharper and light weight :)

yeah thats ok cos 400 is just for now, then in couple of months then it'll be bigger budget, just cant afford body and lenses all at once
