D90 to a D7000?

Hi All

I have owned a D90 for a couple of years and have the urge to upgrade to a D7000. Especially as they have come down in price a bit.

Anyone on here done it and would recommend it as an upgrade? Or is it a bit of a sideways step?

I can't decide whether to go for it or hold off and go full frame.
I'm aware the 7000 has a newer and better sensor and more features. Personally I am not too fussed about the video aspect of it.

I have seen a few comparison images from a D90 and a D7000 (Cameralabs) and quality wise there doesn't appear to be huge amounts in it.
A few people have also mentioned focussing issues. Is this actually a fault of some of the early models or more of a case of getting used to the new system?

I have seen a few people on here that use the D7000 and the results look superb.

I went from a D90 to a D7000.

If I didn't use video, the upgrade wouldn't be that much.

Their ISO noise is very similar - the D7000 is a third of a stop better. What is good is that if needed, you can shoot at 12800 and 25600.

The SOOC images are better from the D7k though and if you shoot anything that moves about a lot then the AF is better due to more points but not necessarily more accurate.

For me, video would be the reason to upgrade tbh.
 
Although I think you'd be more than happy with the D7000, especially at the price, I think the new D7100 would prove to be a substantial upgrade. (prices will slowly come down, just as the D7000's did)

Also, what are your main interests/subjects? IF you can afford to wait & save, FF would be a BIG upgrade & you'd certainly not be disappointed.

I have shot a lot of motorsport stuff in the past to which the improved AF may help however I am just using a Nikon AF-S VR 70-300 f4.5-5.6G IF-ED jobby for it which is good but not really fast so whether this would make a huge difference on a 7000 I don't know.
Other than motorsport I tend to shoot a bit of everything. Architecture, wildlife, landscape, the odd macro etc.
 
The 70-300mm is a pretty decent lens tbh. I used it on my D7000 & as long as the light was fairly good, found results very good. (it's actually not bad on my D800E)

If motorsport is your main subject, you might be better off with a faster/brighter lens. 70-200mm F2.8 (pre-owned?) You can always add a TC if you need more reach & light allows, or look at a 300mm F4 prime? if you don't need the wider range of a zoom.

I’d do it to be honest, they’re really cheap on Digital rev now (around the £500 mark) and it’s like your D90 just with every bit just a little bit better. You would only have to add another £200 given that your D90 would probably sell for circa £300.
 
I was in a similar quandary move from d90 a d7000/d7100 but went full ftame and apart from im going to have to buy new glass.
 
Ive considered ff but im going with the d7100 as I dont want to have to buy all new lenses and yes ff is better but there isnt alot between the d600 and d7100. Id say d7100 over d7000.

I went from D90 to D7000 and in my opinion the D7000 is definitely worth the extra cash:)
Mines not had much use for a while now but I'm sure I made the right choice. As mentioned above, everything is just that little bit better.
Mag alloy body (most of it anyway) feels more sturdy, dual SD cards, full HD as oppose to 720 and better AF.

I had D90, then bought D7000 (as soon it was released) and I felt an "upgrade". Body itself feels better, better AF, better ISO, (don't use video so that wasn't important), weather sealed, FPS, Better batteries,dual SD slot. Well it's just worth that extra :)

I get paid next weekend so might be tempted to see what I get offered on a part ex deal.

How do you find the exposure and colour on the 7000? I found the D90 out of the box to be slightly overexposed/washed out colours on a good day. More so than what I would consider normal. I have seen a few others mention this too.
I tend to shot on vivid colour with the exposure around -0.7 which helped significantly. Mostly on Aperture or Shutter priority depending on what I am shooting.
 
A bit of an update... The D90 sold on eBay this morning for £270! Fairly happy with that as I was aiming for about £300.
It stayed around £200 until the last minute when it just jumped significantly.

Should be checking out a D7000 later today :D
 
Well I purchased one! :)

I haven't had much time to have a play other than a few indoor portrait shots. Testing out the ISO range.

Pretty impressed I must admit. Feels nicer to hold, quicker and more slick to my previous D90. I really like that you can push the ISO a lot more to get the result. I found the D90 degraded a little bit at 800-1000 onwards.
I need to master what these fancy focusing modes all mean now and get out with it!

David, I have the Tamrom 90mm Macro too. Agreed, it is a good lens especially for the money.
