Evening all. Right I have a nikon D90 with a few lenses, the best being a 17-55 f2.8 ed. I would like a bit more from my camera, mostly faster shutter speed. Is this worth getting a new body and how much should I ask for my v good condition D90 with 18-105 kit lens.
 
my thoughts would be ,,,what cant i freeze at 4000th ?
 
How is the D90 holding your photography back?

....or have you got money burning a hole in your pocket/GAS :p

I would look at better lenses before upgrading the body. (unless, of course you have outgrown the D90!)

ebay has several D90+18-105 kit lens between £350-£450

Flames are hard to freeze. The d90 doesn't track very well. (IMO) the d90 won't auto focus when filming.....or am I wrong?
 
I can honestly say that I have never used my D90 for video! :p

If flames are what floats your boat, then I would think that you need to be looking for something which will give you high ISO capability, to increase the shutter speed, plus good glass!

Possibly expecting a bit much from the D90 (although I am sure someone will prove me wrong!) ;)

The D7100 does a very good job of autofocusing on video, used mine a few times on fast moving horses (y)

Having owned both cameras, unless you are looking for a fast buffer rate then the D7100 is a good upgrade, handles high ISO
well, meaning you can get a decent picture at the faster shutter speeds, autofocusing in low light is pretty good too.
 
And your point is ?
Have you tried either camera personally ?
Two very different subjects/situations there, plus you have to take the lens into the equatio as well and how fast that will focus
I'll sort out one of mine later and show you what the D7100 can do under difficult circumstances.
But I would say that if you really want to do video then get a dedicated camcorder.

The 70D has a live view AF system that is built for this kind of thing, it's far superior to anything else on the market in live view AF.

I do a lot of video work and for times where full time AF is required, that video of the D7100 just wouldn't cut it. The circumstances wasn't really difficult for a body that can af down to -2ev either, the guy was walking slowly and it was hunting and missing focus pretty bad...I wouldn't feel comfortable using it to make a video with unless it's a YouTube upload.

The 70D quite easily tracks the moving kid. I'd be happy to use that.
 
Here's a really good comparison between the D7100 & 70D. I'm thoroughly impressed by the 70D's new tech for video focus in which it still used phase detection - it really is quite impressive...D7100 appears to have nothing new apart from the inherited 51-point system.
