My Dad is looking at getting a Panasonic FZ45 (about £280). He wants it for general everday use, landscapes, pics of the grand kids and great grand kids, out and about stuff etc.

At over 70 years old, he doesnt want the "hassle", as he calls it, of going the full DSLR route but he wants something more substantial in the hand than a P&S.

Is the Panny FZ45 the best he can get for this price? What else should he take a look at?

Thanks in advance for your help

HI Nigel, I have an old FZ8 and that even takes pretty good photos and my daughter has the fz38 which is loads better than my fz8. the45 is even newer so I would imagine even better. I rate the pannys over all the other prosumer cameras out there, go for it. There are a joy to use too BTW.

What is it about an SLR that makes him think it will be a hassle? A second hand 20 or 30D with a kit lens should cost him about the same and when he sees the difference in quality I'd hope it would be appreciated. Shoot to JPEG rather than RAW and there is no hassle really.

My brother law has Panny FZ8. Great camera and i'm sure the newer model is good. There's also aPanny TZ10 that also looks the business

I had one just over a couple of weeks back, sent it back for a refund as I wasnt getting on with it, quite noisy especially when compared to even the most budget of DSLR..

you will find a few of my test shots here.

dont get me wrong its okay but if you are used to DSLR's you will find it a problem, especially in low light..

check out the Fuji HS10 and the Canon SX20 IS for alternatives, and apparently reviewers are saying the Lumix FZ38 has the edge on image quality and they should not have upped the megapixels to 14.1.

so to sum up how I feel, its okay with decent shots and a wealth of features but you will find image quality lacking.
