Yes
i've only ever had a Nikon camera body without an AF motor...

if you have a body with an AF motor and a lens with an AF motor, what combination of settings do you need for the camera body to do the AF?

lens AF on + camera AF on
lens AF off + camera AF on ?

i wasn't sure if there might be some kind of conflict if both body and lens are set to AF

It won't work, or at least the autofocus won't work, only manual focus.

You have a Nikon D60 camera body, only certain lenses will work with this body. More recent Nikkor lenses have motors built into the lens body, as you know.

These newer lenses carry an AF-I or AF-S designation in their name, and are the only types of lenses the D40/40x/60/3000/5000 can autofocus with. CPU-equipped lenses lacking built-in focus motors can be used in manual focus mode.

The lack of an onboard focus motor is a key feature distinguishing the D40/40x/60 from the D90/300/700. If you need to use older lenses (or a lot of Nikons current line of prime (non-zoom) lenses with your DSLR, you need to use the D90/300/700 models.

that sounds about right... so what happens if I put an AFI/AFS lens on a D90/300/700?
it won't work?

is there any benefit with having a motorised lens (HSM, AFS, etc) on a body which also has a motor (D90, etc.)?

or does it make no difference?

The latest lenses have very quick and silent motors so in theory focus quicker:thumbs: and don't make a noise and scare the birds away.

The bl##dy shutter does that

:)

i'm just scouring through the boards to work out which of these to buy!

Tamron 28-75 f2.8
Sigma 24-70 f2.8

oh the joys of trying to decide!
