Damaged 40D advice

Hi, I'm wondering if anyone could offer some advice...

I recently bought a used 40D via another "well known" forum. I had the camera a little while, used it twice and bought a BG-E2 grip from the same seller, again via the forum.

After coupling the grip the camera developed a problem where by it would turn on, nothing would display on the large LCD and the little LCD would display "busy". Camera would focus but would not take any pictures.

I have sent the Camera off to Colchester Camera Repair, who for the record seem useless (thats perhaps for another thread).

The camera was attempted to be repaired today, the initial idea was they would repair the main board and clean it out for £169. I phoned today to check up on the progress and it seems the board was beyond repair.

The idea now is to replace the main board entirely at a cost of £284.

I originally purchased the camera for £450 via bank transfer and the grip for about £90 via paypal.

This is proving to be an expensive used 40D.

I'm wondering if there is anything I can do about this, I have contacted the original seller but now get no response, although the body worked upon receipt, the fault only occurred after attaching the grip, which by his own admission hadn't been used for a while.

I don't have any insurance that would cover the item.

It seems i'm just going to have to pay up, but thought I would seek advice anyway.

Thanks.

From reading your story quickly, think you are out of luck and will have to pay up for the repair. Sorry.

I'm afraid if the fault seems to have developed after you bought it second hand then you have no come back on the guy you bought it off. That's the risk if buying second hand, sometimes it goes wrong.

All I can suggest is you try and different repairers who may give a different opinion and repair it a lot cheaper.

I'm afraid that's the luck of the draw. The camera was working when you got it.
I bought a 400D second hand and the first time we swapped flash cards the pins bent resulting in a trip to colchester cameras for a new mainboard.

That may have been heavy handedness on the part of my son, or it may have been slightly flakey before, but I just took that as fate. It's been fine since and a good workhorse and my son is very careful with it now.

That is yet another reason to avoid grips. The board could be damaged by the too high voltage, or any other reason. I'd ask if removing the grip helps, but it is in repairs now.

If the grip and batteries were OEM (and you could get the receipt) even if it is out of warranty you may still claim the item is not fit for purpose and ask for free repairs. You would need the EU receipt for that.

It still had the problem after removing the grip. Accessories were all canon branded, I wouldnt be able to get the receipts for the parts though.

Atleast when it comes back it shall have 6 months warranty, watch it happen again when I plug it back in!

I shall be getting some insurance with accidental damage too, after the warranty period if anything happens there may well be an oops I dropped it moment.

Although i'm obviously upset about the wallet damage, its been horrible not having a Camera for all this time!

Was it a proper Canon grip or a 'lookie-likey'?

Wouldn't matter much either way would it? I actually use a real one on my 40D and a look a like on my 20D and both work fine.

When you buy second hand the down side is no warranty (unless still within the manufacturers 12 month warranty)!

You have just been unlucky I think.
