Damaged 40D, any ideas?

I was taking photos at an engagement party on Saturday night with my camera (40D, 18-55IS and canon 580EXII) when I was assaulted (by the grooms brother nonetheless) without any provocation. My camera was knocked ~15 feet across the room landing on a hard wooden floor.

The only external damage appears to be scuffing on the side of the flashgun, although when I went to take photos last night at a local club occasionally a strange problem would occur.

When I half pressed the shutter button to focus on people the af assist light on the flash came on ok and the camera would confirm focus, this then repeated itself several times when the shutter button was half pressed already (af assist light on, camera refocusing and confirming focus, camera and flash settings were all correct) The assist light seemed to be coming on with the regularity that it would blink if the camera was being used as a remote slave (the way it blinks so you know the flash is ready) and even if I fully pressed the shutter while this was happening there would still be a 2-3 second delay before it took the picture. This only happened on approx 5 out of 130 photos.

I reported it to the police on the night (told them I wasnt sure if my camera was damaged or not and that I would need to check it in the morning) and gave them the guys name and address. (I dont personally know him)

Does anyone know what the likely cause of this problem is? i.e. is it likely to be the camera or the flash or would it need to be sent away for a service to confirm? (No prizes for saying it was the fact that it was thrown across the room ;) ) What would be the best way of getting this fixed (bearing in mind I need my camera every week), would it therefore be reasonable to expect this guy to pay for camera rental while it is away getting repaired?

Im guessing you wont be shooting the actual wedding now then?

Surely your insurance should cover the costs of camera rental if you need it for business, assuming you specified that when taking it out?
 
Unfortunately my insurance will only cover rental up to the value of 5% of the insured sum (£950)

Surely if I go through my insurance to claim now that will increase my premiums? Not to mention having to pay a £150 excess. If this is left up to the police will I be able to avoid this or what will the likely outcome be? The barman witnessed it and has given a statement and CCTV will be checked later in the week.

TCR--I doubt it somehow lol, typical of me to get attacked while holding a big lump of metal in my hand and then trying to set it down so I can defend myself... :/
 
ecniv, timer function wasnt set, checked the way it works there now and it lights up the red eye reduction light on the camera after the shutter has been fully pushed, which never happened last night (the red af assist beam kept flashing on and off which doesn't happen when timer function has been set), images turned out fine.
 
Well, the flashgun is worth almost as much as the 40D. Any chance you could borrow another flash/camera to prove which is faulty? Otherwise I'd send the lot away for repair. Fixation have been pretty good for me recently, having a very rapid turnaround.

The other alternative if you suspect the camera is to buy another, or a cheap alternative whilst it's away for repair. MPB have another 40D for £359 or a 400D for £200.
