Decided to get a bit closer,so used a 36mm extension tube on my Canon 180 for this shot.
Also had a play with my ring flash and have now got it diffused with a few layers of plastic packing material (as per suggestions from this vey useful forum (y)) and now feel I am getting a bit closer to controlling the light.

Went out a bit later in the evening for this shot...

Colours look nice but the eye seems out of focus compared to the body which is always a shame for shots like this. It's tough trying to get all the important bits in focus! c
 
Azure Damselfly.

Spot on with composition, exposure - keeping the background with some colour shows good control of the lighting. At this magnification, without stacking, you'll either get the eye of the thorax sharp not both. I think you have got it just right.
