Hi all,

I'm off to India and have decided on the kit I wish to take:

1Ds2, 30D, 24-105, 50mm 1.4, 135L, 580exII

This is a business trip so I have to take a laptop. Sharing hand luggage between me and my colleague I have to lose about 1Kg.

Should I consider putting the 30D and flash into hold luggage? I can't see they'd come to much harm if right in the middle of the case surrounded by clothes.

What do you think?

Thanks

Phil

Have you ever seen suitcases handled in an airport? Well they routinely throw them to the truck from several meters height on top of each other, and stamp them to fit more. You would need an lot of packaging to make it safe, plus there is a risk it might get nicked at some stage. So NO.

Shove a lens and the flash into your jacket pockets  and take it with you in hand carry. They can't do you for being 'over weight' . Checked- in baggage gets thrown about a lot in airports, cameras are precision instruments and so should be treated as such.

i must admit the flash will be fine but as for anything else i would carry on board. As someone suggested maybe putting a lens in your jacket pocket and put the jacket through the scanner.

Everything like batteries, lens hood, cables can go in the hold if that reduces weight. Finally see if your colleague has a little weight spare.

If you really need too then just wrap it in 2 or 3 towels in a padlocked holdall... but can't you pay for extra baggage when you book your flight

I still think you were better set before you wavered ;)

Many thanks to all. I've thought for a bit about 35mm 1.4 or 50mm 1.4 and decide to go with the 50mm.

Sooo... 1DSII, 24-105, 135L, 50mm 1.4

The extra kit is already getting in the way and you've not even gone anywhere yet. To answer this question though, I don't think it's a very good idea.

Having seen what various airlines have done to my checked baggage I would NEVER put ANYTHING of value in checked baggage.

My bags regularly emerge looking like the Saints pack have used them for scrum practice and sadly I have real worries about letting anything of value out of my sight at ANY airports.

My advice is that if it is of zero value financially and/or sentimentally then check it, otherwise carry it on or leave it at home

Thanks for all the replies. I like the idea of a second body because it gives me more reach being a 1.6x and the charger for 30D is lighter so easier to pack in case I flatten the batteries!

I think that tucking the spare body in my pocket sounds like a good plan.

Time for more precision weighing of bags!

Its time for big pockets!I travel with a photo vest, last time I was in the states I come home with 2X 580EX2's,1dmk3 charger and spare battery, 1.4 and 2X TC's, 24-105L and still plenty of room in the pockets lol.:D

Not to mention the occasional case coming off the transporter mid-travel and not even making it to the aircraft!
We always travel with heavy grade polycarbonate suitcases but even these can get an awful lot of abuse.

We've each got a baggage allowance of 7kg. My laptop (minus battery) + 1Ds2 + 50mm 1.4 comes to 7kg in my LowePro bag. My colleague's laptop + bag is about 4.5kg. If I put the 30D, 24-105 and 135L in a small camera bag that is 2.5kg ish so I think it just about works!

The flash will have to go in the hold.

Check with the airline.

I know Singapore Airlines don't count a laptop as part of your luggage allowance. Ie. 7kg + laptop.

I shoved all my batteries and other sundries in the laptop bag.
