Hi,

Last week took my camera to work and trying taking a few photos at lunch time, when I viewed the images on my PC I can see a dark dot on the top left:

Link as I could not get the picture to expand:

I did check the lens but could not see anything on the lens, how do I find out what has cause this, I can see it on other pictures as well where I am pointing to the sky.

Thank you

Commonly known as 'dust bunnies'.

Your camera sensor needs cleaned. I'm not sure if there is a thread on here about cleaning but you could Google it.

It's quite a technical job and most peeps take the camera body to a shop to be cleaned. I suppose it depends on the camera owner.

what camera you got?

take a picture of blue sky at f22, import the jpeg and auto levels it and you'll get a shock lol

You can clean it yourself using a special kit, they tend to be a bit expensive but worth it. Your camera is likely to have a special setting to open the mirror and actually get to the sensor - but be very careful - it's hugely delicate and senstive. Good Luck. Spot healing on editing software will get rid of the spots on existing shots.

Thanks all. Will look into it.

The camera is a Nikon D80.

I use a rocket blower like this http://www.amazon.co.uk/Giottos-GTA...LSPI/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1297079494&sr=8-1 I have never had to use anything more to clean any sensor, even though I've got a kit to do it.

Spots like that only show up at high f/numbers, like f/11 and above when the lens won't be at its best anyway. So that's an easy solution.

Also bear in mind that the image is inverted by the lens so that dust spot at the top of the image will be at the bottom of the sensor when it comes to cleaning. They can be very hard to see with the naked eye though.

Thanks I have a rocket blower will try out the cleaning.

Tried the blower with the Mirror lock up but no joy. Not sure if I could use the DIY cleaning method. Scared I might damage the camera. Might have to get it cleaned professionally.

Spoke to a friend at the weekend who had the lenspen and he cleaned the sensor for me. Had to do it twice to get the stubborn dirt to come off.

Now that I have seen it being done will get myself a lenspens for the future.

Thanks

I think its pretty obvious that there's dust inside your sensor.

Yeah, it's pretty obvious if you are experienced. If you are fairly new to the world of SLR's then you may not know. It's not right to assume everyone knows everything straight away. I had to ask someone I work with (who I bought my D70 body from) why I had spots on my pics.

And if you are going to be pedantic about it, the dust is ON the sensor, not IN it.

Or if you want to be really really pedantic it is on the anti aliasing filter that is in front of the sensor :D
 ok ya got me

Fair nuff, but either way it's not IN it and not obvious to someone it hasn't happened to :)
