Thought i'd just edit this thread rather than create a new one,

I opted for the Jessops 360 AFD ( arrived today )

From my playing around with it, i've noticed that the screen only displays ISO/ F stop when the flash is completely flat ( ie not swiveled/titled ) ?


Also...

ANyone know what the " S " means which has an " Off --- ( and ) S " , i'm thinking it's to do with Manual Zoom on/ Off? ( s is a funny letter for "On" though lol)

I take it your top end budget is £60-£70 going by what you've said?

Jessops 360 seems to be popular choice with those starting out with flash, although it's closer to £80 on the website, so might exceed your budget.

I'd have a look through some of the used dealers in this link to see what's available.... you never know, you might pick up a bargain :)
 
The jessops afd 360 is very good at £79 brand new.

However, I'm not sure a flash gun would be that effective on a rally stage?

Might be better buying a 2nd hand fast prime?
 
I might be talking out of my backside here but is flash photography even allowed? Potentially distracting a driver as he approaches a corner at high speed doesn't seem a particularly good idea. I realise it must be difficult to prevent on open stages but it's not something I'd do.

The reason i'm wanting one is incase it gets really quite dull ( which has happened a few times when i've been there )

I think it would work, as long as i used a diffuser to reduce glare etc
 
OP, I think flash is a good idea - at least using flash you can do some slow-sync stuff to add movement into shots, plus you have the option of popping at higher outputs to freeze stuff there and then. I'm sure the guys in the 'talk motorsport' section will be able to give you advice and inspiration :)

Sto-fen type diffuser isn't really going to help you much - they're designed for bounce flash in reality. A little micro softbox might help make the flash appear that little bit bigger to soften shadows (useful for people shots and close-ups) but in all honesty, you should be fine without one for the car stuff :)
 
The jessops afd 360 comes with a little flip down diffuser which will do the job!

It stands for 'Slave', keep it switched off when using the flash on either the camera or on a set of triggers/ttl cord. Otherwise your next post will be asking why the flash isn't working :naughty:

THanks, don't suppose you could save me googling by telling me what SLave stands for in context of flashes....!?

EDIT: It's just sprung into my mind, basically can be controlled using remotes/sensor off the camera :)

Can't see myself doing that so i think it'll be off for quite some time.

Spot on -it's a lot handier than you might at first think though ;)

Thanks for the help, i'm still on the learning curve :)


Going to the Mcrae STages ( Forest rally ) at the week-end can't wait!

DOn't think i'll use the flash ( hopefully it's bright enough ).. I've been attending very miniscule rally events for some practice for it :) Been the past few years but this will be the first with a DSLR :D

Can't wait!
