Decent lead for tethered shooting

Just looking to get a lead for some tethered shooting to a Laptop, is their anything in particular i should be looking for, or will any standard one from Maplins do, not done it before, so i don't know, hence the question. Thanks in advance :)
 
I think any will work, I just bought a cheap 5m one of ebay. Its nothing flash but as you are putting a digital signal down it you can't effect the picture.

Maplin ;)

Once you get to a long cable you really want an active extension. Just use the cable from your camera in an active extension from Maplin (or similar) and tape them together.

Alternatively, use a decent quality cable from somebody like Lindy but make sure it's no longer than 5 metres. Their transparent ones look pretty and seem to work well.

Lots of people use Lindy ones, if over 5m total then the active one.

The amazon basics usb2 3m extension is good too, as are the usb3 extensions that cpc do
 
I got the one from this link http://www.uklight.co.uk/tethertools/usb-firewire-hdmi-cat6-cables.html and Its orange so covers you for health and safety. You don't want a claim on your insurance for a client tripping over black usb daisy chained cables. It is 15ft long, and on this site they sell extensions. Additionally, it comes with a tether kit like the one here (which secures cable to sling attachment, to make sure if someone trips over your cable that it wont pull out breaking the usb connection on your camera.

Sure it's more expensive but you will have peace of mind like I do.
 
Doesn't matter what colour the lead is. Trailing cables won't pass any sensible risk assessment.

That's why the good lord invented gaffer tape (literally for once).

The jerkstoppers are nice and I use them to prevent stupid photographer disconnects - but if you have a situation where somebody can walk into a cable I'd rather it pulled the usb lead out then dragged the camera to the floor.
 
Eye fi card okay for small jpegs but too slow for full resolution. Tethered with actove lindy cable I can shoot raw and image appears on screen within two seconds. Event work I use eye fi and shoot small jpeg, cannot have the risk of a cable and only printing 9x6 inch prints. Different workflows for different jobs.
 
Thanks again for the replys, something i never realised, with Nikon when shooting tethered the images only go to the laptop, and not to the card as well, presumably when they go to the laptop they are stored on the internal hard drive though, or do you need an external one to store them ?

Depends on your software. I tether straight to lightroom, onto laptop drive. White balance tweeks, tone curve, anything else you want applied on import. Ready to print.
