Hi guys,

looking to revamp my website as it looks dated and doesn't do it for me anymore and am doing research on websites before rushing into it (like I did last time).

So... I first looked at Wix.com but have read a lot of bad reviews so have been put off them, this now leaves me with three possibilites:

PhotoBiz (http://photobiz.com/home.cfm)
Great reviews on the net although apparently not that many customising options

$125 & $25 (iPhone site) one off fee, $15 p/m for 200 images

Photium (http://www.photium.com/)
Looks nice, some good reviews but for the 15 pages I want my website to have it would cost £185 a year

Photocrati (http://www.photocrati.com/)
Looks too good to be true! Great video showing the easy controls, apparently fully customisable, offers a blog feature and only $79!? Anyone found the catch?

I am not looking to sell through my website, nor have pages to display customers photos as we have face to face viewings. I am looking for a site to display galleris for my photos, information about myself and the fiancee etc

If anyone uses any of these sites, feedback on them would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Iain

Speak to this guy.... flash or html he's a top bloke and has done a few sites (inc mine).

Flash sites aren't great for SEO but I'm not worried about that at the moment. I'll be speaking to him though about an HTML site when I need to.

Love your site, exactly the type of thing I'm looking for. iF you don't mind me asking, how much did you pay for your site and how do you update it with new photos, event pages, blog etc? Are you given software to edit it or have to pay a maintenance fee?

George is a friend of mine and I did some work for him so we negotiated that and I got it for a pittance! I had to force him to take it from me too!! His sister is a pro shooter too so I don't get any work from him any more but we're still friends! lol

I've put a few people onto him and to be honest I do not discuss pricing with any of them as that is between them and George - so in that matter I really can't help.

Because he's a friend I basically got all the files inc the xml files and to amend the images I just upload the images to the appropriate gallery and point the xml code to that - very very simple.

No software, No fees whatsoever.

You will need something that can edit xml - but even word can do that I think?

That sounds perfect!

Sorry for the questions but I've never done this before. How about transferring my domain name etc? How does designing the site go, do I give him sketches/psd's or does he design a couple of themes and I choose?

Thanks for your help :)

You will need to log into the control panel for your domain and there should be an "A" record with the numeric address for your existing website (eg 91.199.151.231 as an example for this site).

You then change it to the numeric address of your new webhost server and it should then work within about 24 hours as the new address propagates.

Best way to do it is to change the Nameservers on your domain registrar to your webhost, rather than changing the A records and other DNS settings, to be honest.

That may as well have been in French!:lol:

You buy the domain - you don't need to transfer anything. Just add the files and it works. Not sure if that is different for anyone else though. I just use 1and1 to host it - Generally he'd ask you questions and he'll design it. Best to send him an email and ask though.

thread cleaned. No selling outside classifieds please
