Deciding between two wide angle lenses for Canon

I was set on the Tokina 11-16 f/2.8, I hear it's a great UWA lens but now I'm also considering the Canon EF 24mm f/2.8 IS USM. About a 200$ price difference, not a big deal. Purpose: for taking everyday pictures of people and scenery. Really for documentation (stills). I'm mainly worried about which is an overall better lens. Which lens would you recommend out of the two? Leaning towards the Tokina... Does any own one of these lenses? Thank you!

For others who like me were a little confused by Canon's American model name, it's a 500D this side of the Atlantic!

UWA for people and general use? I would imagine a standard short zoom works better for these.

24mm isn't UWA on crop, But would probably suit your needs better. What about a 24-70 2.8 zoom?

Wouldn't the 24mm be like 36mm on a crop?? The 11-16 is UWA for your body, si I'd stick with the Tokina. If you had a FF body then 16mm would be UWA and would equate to 11mm on a APSC.
