Deciding on a monitor

Well I've been thinking about it for a while and now have the money, so was thinking of upgrading my monitor. :D At the moment I have a 19" Samsung SyncMaster 913N which has worked brilliantly over the last few years, but I'm beginning to find the 1280x1024 max resolution a bit limiting.

I have been looking at 22-24" widescreen monitors on various websites and trying to find reviews etc. I know many on here would recommend the Dell 2209WA eIPS screen but at £200+ new its over budget. However I have been looking on ebay at some second hand ones. Was just wondering if they really are that good and if its worth waiting for one at the right price 2nd hand? :shrug: They seem to go for around £150ish which is my budget really.

Also been looking at other ones and wondering if anyones got recommendations / suggestions / comments.

Anything 21"+ with an IPS (very nice panels) and full HD screen should do fine.
 
Yes but you pay £100+ more for an IPS panel (new). I will usually be sitting infront of it so angles aren't such an issue, I was thinking more for colour accuracy. With the Acer, I can get a new monitor that is 2" larger than the 2209WA, larger screen resolution and its new... hmm... decisions decisions... :thinking: I use it for Photoshop, AutoCAD, PC gaming, watching movies etc to the extra inches / screen resolution might be more useful for toolbars, menus etc

edit - a more useful reply would be that i use it for movies, photoshop/lightroom, call of duty and NEVER wished i had more res or.. erm.. size.. except maybe the addition of a 2nd for running PS and LR at the same time.
 
I have to say i've just bought a HannsG 22" to replace a 19" HannsG, all three (still have 1x 19"!!) have been/are excellent and the value for money is great.

Just another one to add to your list!
 
Thanks guys, yes 2 would be ideal neil... sadly budget doesn't allow... :bonk:

What would be the max you would pay for 2nd hand 2209WA under a year old in good condition with box, cables etc and inc Delivery? Got my eye on one. ;)

The Philips 230C1HSB one looks pretty good aswell, dunno how I missed that one. Will also definately check out the HannsG one.
 
i think i paid 170 for mine off a forum member that had been used extremely briefly before being boxed and put in a loft..

for a good one with no dead pixels id expect to pay 150-170 tops, theres a brand new one on ebay for 189 + postage.

Yup, thats the one! Arrived about an hour ago! Woot! What a BEAST! :D :D :D Haven't had much time to play with it obviously, but first thing I noticed obviously is the size... :p So much more desktop space to play with! Second is the colour, it instantly looks so much better! Third is the stand itself, so adjustable... hight, tilt, rotate, pivot screen to portrait mode... the whole thing oozes quality!

Can you tell im pleased?! :nuts:

Thanks to the guys on this thread raving about the 2209WA I took delivery of mine today. £175 refurbed (not a mark or dead pixel on it, in original box with all original accessories) from nrg_it off fleaBay.

Lovely monitor - thanks for all your recommendations :thumbs:

No probs, still enjoying mine too! So much better for photoshop, autocad etc so toobars aren't in the way! The stand is great, but thinking about perhaps getting a Vesa desk mount (on an arm) so I can move it around even easier.
 
Looks like I should get me one of these! Had a look at those refurb ones on fleabay (nrg_it).... good value if they are all faultless.

Well, I can obviously only speak for the one I got sent - but there certainly isn't anything wrong with mine!

Now I'm trying to decide between the dell (new with 20% off from Dell small business) or the Samsung Syncmaster F2380M. I've been looking at this site for reviews.

I was going to buy the Philips mentioned above but the ebuyer price has gone up from149.99 to 169.99 which made me hesitate at which point the review of it on the above site made me think twice. The Samsung is 1 inch bigger and has HDMI and speakers and seems to get an excellent review but which wouldl be best for editing?

Just found out the Dell has 30% off currently but is still expensive and you can't use the discount voucher when buying it as part of a system or in addition to the current sale.

Nick T, I have a 17" non-widescreen like your monitor on the left at the mo and find it frustrating for image editing in photoshop. I would really like to see the whole picture I am editing much bigger on screen.

With the Dell 22", can you simply see the picture bigger because you have more width of screen allowing for the toolbars to sit at the side? The 22" is roughly the same height so does it make a major difference for editing?

If it wouldn't be too much of a faff (or thread hijack!) would you be able to show photoshop / image editing on each screen side by side so I can make a comparison?

I went for the Dell in the end. The same deal as mentioned above - £175 delivered, refurbished and 1 year warranty. It's due to arrive tomorrow.

Only just spotted this message - sorry for not replying sooner.

I'll try and remember to knock something up for you tomorrow - but yes, the workspace does look much larger on the 22" monitor, despite only having about an inch extra in height.

Right - here you are. I've only done the comparison using a landscape image - portrait, you'll get a bit bigger size, but the small height difference doesn't really add much in a portrait image.

Also - I couldn't work out how to fire up two copies of photoshop at a time, so there are two photos. One on the small monitor, and one on the large one...

Quite a big difference!
Apologies for quality - the batteries in the flash are dead, but it should give you something to base an opinion on :thumbs:
On both occasions the photo was told to 'fill screen'
 
Holy cow that is a big difference! Many thanks for that, it will certainly help me decide. Just got to sweet talk the wife now!
