Hello all,

Its been a while since I have been on here and about 12 months since I have done much photography..anyway..

I have started to get the bug again and I am facing a bit of a dilema as do most photographers..

I currently have a Nikon D7000 which i have had from new for almost 3 years and has been a pleasure to work with, I have all the accessories, extra batteries, battery grip etc and currently only have the 70 - 300 AFS and 50mm 1.8 Afs.

Now, I have always fancied the 24 - 70 AFS(I know its FX and my camera is DX but), should I buy this lens or should I sell my current camera and go for the D600/610 and stick with my current lenses for the time being. Now before you ask, another issue i have is choosing what genre I enjoy the best(which I am not sure yet after all this time), how ever I do know I enjoy wildlife and sport that's why I bought the 70 -300 which serves me very well, but I have always been pulled to taking photos of people and would like to get back into portraits but not your everyday portraits. I would like to photograph people in their favourite environments on location etc.

What are your views on this or is it a no-brainer..

The 24-70 is one of the so called trinity of fast, constant aperture zooms and has always been a great lens. The D600 had a few teething troubles and has largely been replaced by the D610 and will no doubt soon be replaced in the line-up again while the 24-70 continues to be in the current range of lenses. The D7000 will enjoy the lens.
 
The 24-70 2.8 is a nice lens, but it's not actually THAT great. Has some weird field curvature characteristics at 24mm end, and really terrible chromatic aberration at wider apertures. It's a good lens... reliable, and well built, and overall I'm happy with mine, but it's not the wonder-lens that the 14-24 2.8 is.

Also... on your D7000 it will actually be equivalent to 36 to 105..which may, or may not be a useful range to you... only you can know that.


as for the D7000... keep it. Great camera. What do you feel you'll gain by getting a D600/610?

I just thought that i would gain better IQ going full frame to be honest..

What would you recommend as an alternative to the 24 -70 then guys..i have thought about the 17-55mm but not sure if i need it that wide. I would like it to be 2.8 for the option to blur out backgrounds though..

If you like to shoot into the sun then the 17-55 isn't the best option, it suffers terrible flare problems. But if that's not an issue for you then it is a wonderful lens. It's super quick to focus and has great image quality. I also used it on the d7000. It is almost as big as the 24-70 though.
 
An option would be to get the Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 but ultimately if you want to blur the background you probably want a properly fast lens which means either primes or the rather amazing Sigma 18-35 f/1.8 which is bigish but if you were considering the Nikon 24-70 then you won't be too scared. Or maybe one of the new Sigma Art f/1.4 prime lenses.

However, it really depends on what focal lengths you want.

As for going full frame. Yes the IQ is better but you'll only really notice this if you are printing to massive sizes. And yes, you will get shallower depth of field (more blurred background) but the difference isn't huge in every day usage.
 
You have a good camera and two so-so lenses. Plus you're interested in sports and wildlife, where more reach is generally advantageous. You'll see a much better return if you keep the camera and upgrade your lenses.

The Nikkor 17-55mm f2.8 DX is a really good lens, definitely worth considering.
I had it paired up to my D7000 and it was the most used lens.
