At the moment I have a 5dmk2 as my primary camera body, which is used for wedding, commercial and PR photography - this suits me very well and I think it's a great body.

I use a 50d as my backup - which currently has a WFT-E3 attached - however the WFT-E3 is currently for sale (in another thread).

I've inherited from a family member a low shutter count great condition 1dmk3 - which on the face of it is a better build of camera, designed to last many moons longer than a 50d.

However on paper - the 50d spec far outweighs the 1dmk3.

I've not had a chance to use the 1dmk3 yet due to work commitments - but wondered whether if you had the choice of using a 1dmk3 or a 50d - which you'd rather have and why?

I don't do sports photography - I don't need super fast tracking auto focus - I don't need 10fps burst rates - what I do need is a reliable camera that can deliver great quality shots, sometimes at higher ISO's in low light environments.

Has anyone used both bodies? Or even own both bodies at the moment that can give me a run down comparison, and which you prefer and why?
 
I have a 1D3 to back up my 1D4 and 5D2. Depending on what I'm shooting I may take only the 1D bodies. As you said, one doesn't have to need the fast frame rate or tracking capability. You simply want to have a reliable body which can literally shoot anything. The 1D series is just that. Canon built the 1D bodies to very tight tolerances which also means that your keeper rate will be higher with the 1D3.

I wouldnt say the 1dmk3 would last any longer than a 50d, both are built like tanks!

TBH I'd stay with what you have as you currently have the best of both worlds. I take it you cant keep all three??
 
No I can only keep two - and that would also be the most sensible option. The 5d2 isn't going anywhere :) However it's whether the 50 or the 1d3 has the edge.. The weatherproofing of the 1d3 is better, however the MP/ISO performance of the 50d is better.. I know the answer is probably that I need a 1d4 - but that's out of range :)
