I seem to recall reading sometime ago that there was some advantage to having a dedicated server for your web hosting. Can anyone explain what, if any, advantage there is?

Faster page loading, more space and flexibility also can handle high volumes of traffic.

Dedicated servers have dedicated processors, ram, disk drives ect as apposed to shared hosting where many people share the same processing power, ram, hard drives. The down site to this is that it's up to you to configure the server and that's not always easy the best compromise is virtual private servers (VPS) these are managed servers that offer all the good points of a dedicated server with out the down sides and are much cheaper.

This is just my opinion of corse :D

You'd also need a fairly high bandwidth and disc space usage plus return on investment to justify the cost.


As Matt's said a VPS would be much more viable.
 
What is your monthly bandwidth?
 
Currently switching over to VPS.......and regretting it!!!

1 and 1 basically just close you old site (fortunately I backed it up) and leave you with sweet eff all in the way of help, you have to configure everything yourself, 4 hours later, and I think I may be getting somewhere.

Paralells and Plesk??? WTF is that all about ????

Take a look on YouTube for guides on setting up plesk it may seem like a massive headache at the moment but in time you will be glad you moved to a vps
 
Well finally got it all up and running, not a process I'd like to go through again in a hurry. :bang:

Got the main Wordpress based site up yesterday and managed eventually to get my Photocart back up today. Took ages to find the database, which was in fact on my old hostings cpanel and Myphp admin, and not in the download file of my old site.

Not entirely sure why I did it, but it does seem to be loading a little faster :)

Thanks Matt, that was good advice about YouTube, was also helpful to see others having the same problems as me.

Its amazing how by chance you come across one little bit of info that suddenly makes everything work. In may case, it was needing to "Drop" the table layout in a MySQL database, before uploading my old database, as soon as I did that, bingo! suddenly started to see my old site again, albeit without any pictures. Fortunately uploading the pictures was fairly easy, and to my surprise it seemed to know where to put them all.
