Define Natural Light

All,

I've always thought natural light to be, well, natural. Looking through various forums and sites ( flickr, etc) however, it seems I might be mistaken.

In many natural light groups and discussions some people clearly consider the use of on board flash and reflectors as natural light and that it can be considered natural light as long as it's not shot under studio conditions. Am I missing something?

I would consider natural light 100% natural with possibly the odd bit of help from a reflector.

Opinions please and thanks,

Iain

As soon as you use flash, it's not natural. No probs with reflectors though.

Exactly what I thought.

Thanks for replying

Same here - if you've added a lightsource it's not natural.

There may be some who might claim that shooting by artificial sources such as streetlights could be considered "natural" if they hadn't added to it, but i would disagree.

I'd call street lights 'ambient' as they are in the environment and not added by the photographer.
I would not call Flash/Studio lights natural light.

For me flash is a NO NO, for natural day/moon light, however reflectors, shades and other available light manipulation is allowed
