Hi all
Just bought a 3yr old Del Dimension 1950, what I wanted to do is wipe the hard drive clean and reinstall XP, but when this was attempted the computor kept crashing, so wiped clean again and Dell XP reinstalled works fine.
Question why wont normal XP work

I think Dell tend to have some dedicated hardware in their PC's which require the right drivers to be installed to work correctly, that is why they are often supplied with their own installation discs specific to Dell as this contains the necessary drivers, whereas normal XP discs probably don't.

The major hardware components aren't generally Dell specific, it's usually relatively cheap Taiwanese / Chinese motherboards for which the appropriate drivers are not included in the normal Windows CD, so you have to go searching for them on the manufacturer's website after dismantling the computer to find the make and model of the mobo.

We have Dells here and have wiped and re-installed "normal" Windows onto them, some it just works, others need more effort.

things like sata controllers require drivers on the press F5 to load raid/storage drivers we've found.

but then even with high end motherboards ive had this.

to the OP - was it bluescreening when it got to the "starting windows" by any chance?

The 1950 seems to come up as a PowerEdge server rather than a desktop? Is that what it is? Also can you be more specific on how it crashes?
If you can find drivers from Dell, you could make your own customised XP disc without the bloat by integrating the drivers into XP using nlite.

Sorry my mistake its a 9150, don't really know what was happening when it was crashing as it was given to a freind of mine to do but he failed.
