i am thinking of buying the dell u2412 ips,i have read that the screen coating gives the whites a dirty look,does anyone have this screen?and could advise me if it is a problem,unfortunately i cant go to see a one in a shop.all advise much appreciated.
 
I have this monitor and don't see any issues with whites.

It is my first decent monitor so have nothing to compare it too but when I brought it I was amazed with its size and quality.

I am very happy with it and not looking to change it anytime soon.

I have calibrated it and my prints match the screen. What more can you ask for.
 
I have the older 2209wa with the same ips panel just smaller. The reason some say dirty is that it uses a matte anti-glare coating. It's more of looking like grain than dirt since properly calibrated whites are white. But I will take a matte AG screen over Gloss AG any day for photo work.

I have a Dell IPS (forget the model) and it's next to useless due to the fact I cannot get it looking anything near what is 'normal' - it's basically way to saturated/contrasty, need to buy myself a hardware calibrator.......... :(

I bought a used one from the forum and are easy to use. Just install the latest software and follow the prompts.
