Dell Studio laptop with external monitor.

I have the above with a 17" screen, and feel the time is right to use a external monitor, which would make editing a lot easier.

A couple of questions -

Would the laptop still be fully functional with the lid closed, or will it go into sleep mode?

The monitor I am interested in is the Dell UltraSharp U2312HM. This has 4 usb inputs, so could I plug a external keyboard and mouse into it while the laptop is still closed?

You'll need to go into the power options and tell it not to do anything when you shut the lid, otherwise it'll sleep/hibernate by default.

There will be a USB cable that needs to run from the laptop to monitor for the ports on the monitor to function but yes will still work with lid shut.
