Dell XPS 17

I am just about to place an order for a Dell xps 17. My main question is , is this a suitable laptop for PS and LR, main use would be photo editing.

I'm not very techinical when it comes to computer specs so would appreciate some advise as to how I best to configure the unit.

I have decided on the 1920 x1080 screen (as that is what I have on my desktop), but what else in terms of memory etc.

What processor does it have in it?

4G minimum memory, 8G preferred (I'd avoid 6G as it won't be as fast). You'll probably find the i7 quad processors faster for photo editing but slower for single process tasks (e.g. mp3 encoding). You know if it's a quad as it will be i7-2xxxQM. Anyway, faster the processor the better.

Just the basic graphics processor (1G/550) will be fine.

I've got an XPS desktop with pretty much the same spec and it easily handles PS and LR.

I'd be surprised if your laptop would be any different

I was trying to keep around the £1000 mark and it is already up tp £1132, the 8G adds another £70.

What about the rest of the spec.

You may be able to brig the price down slightly by going for a single 500gb HDD, leaving one bay free for future expansion, also lighter. What about getting it with a 1 * 4GB memory module, I'm sure you can pick up another 4gb dimm a lot cheaper than what Dell want for it.

I'm still going strong with an XPS M1710 2.16GHz dual core laptop which is now over four years old. I've added some memory (now up to 3.2GB usable) and upgraded the HDD from 120GB to 320GB 7,200 rpm. It is perfectly OK for Lightroom 3.4, although my 7D and 5D2 raw files to take a while to render, but editing is quick enough once the files are open. The screen is 1920x1200 and driven by a 512MB nVidia card.

A modern XPS 17 should barely break a sweat. I bought mine from an eBay trader who offers very competitive deals on Dell gear. His feedback is exceptional....

When the time comes to replace my machine, unless I find anything worth having from Apple (not likely) I shall almost certainly be getting another Dell XPS from this guy.

I've been checking out Dell website today and also bought some magazines, but the laptops this guy offers look very good and at a good price! Thanks for the link, think I shall be pressing the buy it now button in the next hour or so!

I'd say that spec is fine for running most things, ive been running lightroom and PS on a 2007 Mac mini before i upgraded to my iMac, which is very underpowered in comparison to that laptop (it ran fine on the mac btw)
