Demise of D3?

I hope the D3 does go out of production soon, hmm maybe i will be able to pick up a bargain somewhere..

It's unlikely that you'll pick up a bargain on a D3—the number of D3 shooters that will upgrade to the D3s (assuming it's the rumoured minor ugprade) will probably be pretty tiny. It's not like the used market will suddenly be flooded with D3 bodies.

Indeed Rob and I'd like to think that Nikon are aware of that point too :naughty:

Well... yeah. I assume the D3s will be pitched at those people who currently have a D2Xs and still haven't upgraded, or those who want to make the step up from a D300—that is, it will just adopt the D3's current marketing. I shouldn't imagine it'll be marketed as an upgrade for the D3, given that it probably won't be that much of one.

I suppose eventually there will be a replacement, so if someone keeps on predicting a replacement, sooner or later they will be right.

Monkey, typewriters and Shakespeare spring to mind.

The 5d2 is a lot of camera for the money, the 7d again good value, in a recession that counts. I'm pretty sure I saw somewhere that canon was top in sales this year (although how it's worked out is anybodies guess) Canon was lagging behind on high iso, but the 5d2 is pretty damm good at 6400 iso, plenty good enough for us wedding togs, and it has the higher resolution as well, could be it's hitting Nikon in the wallet.
I'd hate to see the D3 go, it's a cracking camera.

The 7d is so like a D300s with a 18mp sensor. So Canon have finally caught up with the 2 year old D300 and shoehorned a bit of extra resolution into it.

Yeah, I understand this, but im going to do my best to get one cheaper! Can always live in hope eh!

D3s will be an evolution of the D3 rather than the revolution that the D3 was.

They may stick a slightly larger sensor in it, but my betting is for not. How can they justify the huge D3x price if the D3s (or D4 but my betting is not) is halfway res wise between the d3 and d3x?

I want video on my next camera body (after seeing a fantastic wedding slideshow that included both video and stills) and if there is a D3s/D4 on the way with video then I would probably go for it.

Theres a very good video posted back in this thread made by a dslr that sounds similar.

For the numpties out there like me who haven't got the dollar to spend on either, please enlighten us why... :)

RobMillar pretty much summed it up...basically the D3 is an action photographer's tool, whereas the D3x is a studio photographer's tool...

D3 has a 12.1Mpi FX sensor which is optimised for low-light conditions...
ISO range is 200 - 6400 (expandable to an effective 100 - 25,600)
9fps frame-rate (11fps in DX-crop mode).

D3x has a 24.5Mpi FX sensor optimised for image quality
ISO range is 100 - 1600 (epandable to an effective 50 - 6400)
5fps frame-rate (7fps in DX-crop mode).

Think of it as the difference between an old Nikon F5 and a Hasselblad with a motor-advance...not an exact analogy, but one which should help you get your head in the right place.

The D3 works very well as an action-tool, the D3x can be used as such but with limitations (limited iso, poor low-light capability, slow frame-rate)and is suited more to 'considered' subjects and studio work where the ultimate image quality is paramount...

Put it this way: I go to Afghanistan next week and I'm still debating whether to take the D3x bodies at all...I may just take one wrapped in a towel for the occasional 'gucci' portrait, but it's not really going to be needed out there...
I have an project in mind to document the work done by the Army Chaplain's Corps and D3x might be the tool for that, but weight considerations will ultimately decide...

Be careful Rob........

So they are a duo, derived from the same thinking (large, pro-spec body with high-resolution sensor)....

Arkady, Robmiller, cheers for the quick summary :)

They are a duo in terms of the body design, AF, metering and so on. There the similarity ends. They have very different uses in mind.
