Dentist Macro Photography

Hi,

I have a family member who is a dentist and looking to take pictures of dental treatments.

She has been recommended the following start-up kit:
  • 18MP Camera such as the Canon 100D or 700D
  • 100mm Macro Lens
  • Macro Ring Flash
The kit comes to well over £1k.

Can this sort of photography be done for cheaper? Investing in older kit or searching eBay etc?

Any pointers into what kit I could get to achieve a similar level for a lot less budget would be greatly appreciated.

Pay a professional?

I'm not sure how much a dentist earns in a day, but I assume he's well enough educated to realise that buying the gear isn't enough on it's own and he won't be unpacking the box and getting marketing-ready results within a matter of minutes - it will take hours of practice that will add up into days and then weeks of not-doing-dentistry.

You haven't defined the "similar level"..

What's the purpose behind the photographs? - what are they going to be used for?
 
assuming she wants to use previous results for advertising her services she would do herself a lot of favours (and it would be cheaper/more cost effective) by paying someone
 
If she wants to have good images of all dentistry work which would include cleaning, fillings, crowns, extractions / implants maybe, RC treatment, flossing and so much more...

Then it definitely wouldn't be more cost effective to pay someone.

All the above should be before and after and a lot of the work would not be on the same day.

Regarding equipment, i think she's recommended a good package.
 
To answer your question.

As an example:

Used Pentax K10D = £150
Used manual 100mm macro lens = £150 (unlikely to need AF version)
New Sigma ring flash = £300 ... (very difficult to find used, Pentax version even more expensive)

Total : £600 .... probably a little less if they hunt hard enough. Pentax even did a dedicated dentists kit in a proper case years ago.

I'm sure you could do the same with any of the main camera brands.

it would if you think thats going to be used for advertising and take the spend/return on that into account
 
My dentist uses a D90 and Sigma 105. Not sure what flash he uses but I think it's a 2 gun unit so possibly the Nikon Micro thing. One of the other dentists in the practice uses a Canon of some sort - don't know enough about hem to know which model but he also uses a Sigma 105mm lens. Pretty sure he uses a ring flash.
