I am trying to design a poster in Microsoft publisher but look rubbish can anyone recommend a good DTP?

Have you looked at the templates that come with publisher one of those might be better for you. Other than that I would just perceiver with what you've got, it will all come together in the end.

Wholeheartedly recommend Xara software (which btw just recently won several about.com awards), in particular Xara Designer Pro6 or Photo & Graphics Designer6.
You can do pretty much any graphics or DTP related task in this easy and fast software. Even build web pages.

Adobe InDesign is great but takes a bit of getting used to. You can get a free trial on the Adobe website for 30 days.
