Hi all
Can anyone diagnose the cause of this problem which I have with one of my Nikon D50s
I have interchanged lenses on this and the other D50 body I have to eliminate it being a lens problem
So, any ideas folks, please ?

Thanks !

Unless you have someting in front of the lens (neck strap?) it looks like a shutter fault. In which case you will see it in other pictures, though maybe not all. Shoot a few more at 1/320sec (as here) and see what you get.

it looks like the banding you get when using flash above the sync speed. Obviously not the case in this shot, but I would agree with it being a shutter problem.

If it's in lots of the shots I'd agree with the others that it's a possible shutter issue, take a few test shots at different shutter speeds and see.

It could be the shutter, however the first thing to check is the af mirror return spring. I must admit it's not something I've seen fail on a Nikon (it's fairly common on lower end canon models from the era of your D50, but when spring fails the small af mirror (located on the underside of the main mirror) doesn't return to it's closed position as the main one rises, blocking the top part of the sensor, which is the area that gives you the bottom part of your final image.

To check, simply operate the camera with the lens off and watch to see that the sub-mirror doesn't hang down as the main one lifts. If it does then that's your problem.

Oh dear !

I've just been shooting with the camera and the problem is still there

But when I take off the lens and try to shoot, nothing happens

Is it me ? Am I missing something out?

Doh !

Thanks - that worked

But I honestly cannot tell what's happening inside, so it will probably have to go to a repairer (is this sort of thing expensive?) or put away to gather dust

Many thanks for the kind replies - much appreciated

Try a slower shutter speed maybe around half a second, you might be able to see then.

If it was the mirror you'd see it immediately

Tbh any professional repair will probably cost more than the camera is worth......

Had a kid at college yesterday with this problem, the technician said it look likely to be the shutter curtain sync acting up if that means anything.

If its a year old you should be covered from where you got it from and upto 3 from nikon IIRC
