hi all

did my first christening today for a friend of my gfs sisters, had a bloody mare with it, no flash was allowed in the church so had to wack the iso right up resulting in very grainy pics no cash was being exchanged and the lady knows im not a pro or anything and just wanted pics to remember the day, the only thing that makes me feel good about them is that she originally wanted them done on film because she wanted that "grainy" feeling you get with film, so im going to set about converting them to b+w in photoshop so hopefully with luck im going to give the result she wanted, but still im pretty bummed out about it, but its the first time i've done church photography without being able to use flash, so although it sounds bad as it was a special day for her was kind of an experiment for me.

The first christening I did, I asked the lady vicar if it would be ok to take pictures, she said yes but without flash....then proceeded to ask everyone not to use flash. 5 minutes into the ceremony, somebodies flash went off...and again...and again...there were a few at it yet I remained flashless. She got to the end and thanked everyone for not using flash  I was so annoyed!

I had the same problem last sunday, no flash, poorly lit room and f/3.5 at 18mm just doesnt cut it very well :(

As soon as I have enough for that Tamron 17-50mm 2.8, ill be a very happy man

Hi Lawless23456,
I did my first Christening shoot this year and I found my IS lens invaluable for the slow shutter speeds even at ISO 1600! I was using an f4 lens and I preferred that to my Tamron 17-50 f2.8.
I must have taken about 100 shots in the Church (without flash) and nearly all were useable.
I processed and compiled them and selected the best 50 or so which I had made into a photobook to act as a souvenir in the years to come.

Download Virtual Photographer, it's a freebie plugin which works with Photoshop and Paint Shop Pro, and gives you loads of mono conversion and colour filters, as well as the ability to add grain simulating any ISO film speed.

try using "noiseware comminity edition" sorry havent learnt to link words up yet  just try it honestly it works for noise (sometimes apply it twice) with a touch of sharpening. High iso will never worry you again

What is it with some churches that dont allow flash :shake: they have stood the test of time through wars, winters and some of them have been standing for hundreds of years but they seem to think our flash is going to bring the roof down. cracks me up :bonk: . Thankfully only had a few (no flash) this year

there are a number of PS and standalone noise reduction filters...
