Hi Need some advice.

Currently mainly using 85mm 1.8 for indoor sports. Would love the 70 - 200mm 2.8

Preferably Nikon own, but have considered Sigma equivalent.

Budget tight.

Do I part ex 85mm & get the Nikon or keep the 85mm & go for the cheaper sigma?

Can't keep 85mm & go for Nikon.

What do you reckon is the sigma any good. Should I keep the 85mm?

Cheers Latestarter.

Personally if it was me I would sell the 85mm and buy the 70-200, and I would go with Nikon

personally i dont think it's a good idea to sell the 85mm 1.8, it's a great lens in every way, it cheap but it's sharp, it's fast, it's bokeh is creamy, and it has nice build quality ;)

I would keep the 85, it will come in real handy in some arena's.

How are you going to build up your kit if you dump good glass??

Thanks Guys.

Having thought hard it will have to be the Nikon (at some point) and I guess you are all right, it would be a shame to get rid of the 85.

The wife will have to get back out on the streets.:D

I've never done indoor sports photography, but I've done a bit of gig stuff - I think you might have trouble in some situations with 2.8. It'd always be helpful to have something a bit faster on hand, just incase.

If it was an 85mm f/1.4, I'd say keep it, but since it's the 1.8, I'd sell it and get the Nikkor 70-200 f/2.8 VR-II as it's probably just as sharp if not sharper...

You'll find with a good 70-200 that even a good 85 seldom comes out of the bag any more...you can always buy another 2nd-hand later on if you really miss it...

Thanks Arkady

If I want that 70-200 any time soon then the 85 will have to go.

I have a 50mm 1.4 and the 70-200. The 50mm is my favourite lens as it is sharp and has produced some great pics for me. Most of my work is indoor so 50mm is about the right length for me. But, when I do work outside the 70-200 is fantastic, and guess it would be great for indoor sports. You do need a higher than normal shutter speed as it is a heavy lens and harder to hold still than the 50mm but gives great results. In your position I would sell the 85mm. If you do sell (and are above 100 posts) it may be a lens I am interested in!
