free of charge, if they are for his own personal use but I would stipulate that he does not have any copyright claims to these photos and that if he was to use them any other way i.e. Facebook, flickr, website, newpapers or even prints he must first ask your permission.
 
Good shots, do you need payment for them (ie do you earn part/all of your living by taking photos?). If not donation to appropriate search and rescue charity would be good though as previously said no rights to images.
 
cracking idea Alison, I'd go for that as a suggestion, everyone is a winner and you could agree that S&R could use the image too and gain some exposure yourself. :)

Ask for proof. A charity will usually send a letter of thanks if asked to. I've known people get one to proove that they have paid money over that they have got from sponsored walks etc.
Make sure it's on headed paper though.
