Got a budget of £2k.

Options:

  • Second D200 +70-200 +17-55
  • D3+18-35
  • D700+full frame lens
  • Something else

Ideas?

Age old question... want do you want it for? Sports? Portraits? etc... What lenses do you have now?

Scott - for what you do option one is easily the best I'd say. Two bodies with these lenses fitted and you're good for 90% of press work.

For press I would have thought the D3 would stand up better, better battery life, extra weather proofing, higher frame rate. However value for money the D700 has the same IQ, and a quick frame rate (just add grip if more is needed).

of course - but he doesn't have the budget for that - and better working with two bodies. I don't think he has any lenses either - he just broke his 17-55mm!

Andrew is 100% correct about lens situation! See, I'd like a D3 - could I handle the crap lens for a while?

You can still get a half page out of a D2Hs - might be worth looking at instead of D200's - at least it's tough and weatherproof. great bodies - I still love mine. Pretty good up to 1250ISO too.

what lenses do you currently have?
2x d200s a 17-55 and a 70-200 is basically a setup lacking a UWA which is fairly spot on for press work

then let the cash build up turn the 17-55 into a 24-70 and the d200's into d3's

how do you stand on speedlights?

No lenses! Broken 17-55. Got a SB-800.

It's tough - I've always really wanted a D3, I lasted with an 18-55 kit lens for about six months with my D200 until I got a 17-55.

I've got about £400/500 left in my bank if I got a D3 so surely I could use that towards a 24-70 maybe?

Hmm...

how much cashflow do you have?

would a siggy 24-70 be an ok solution for a weeks until you can afford the nikon? (it is really not a touch on the L so assume not a touch on the nikon)

important q why did the last 17-55 break? do you need to be looking at more pro strength solutions?

About £2.5k.

Dropped.

2.5k a week a month a year?

dropping happens but I like to think my 24-70 would take most impacts and keep going

the sensible option is to buy another d200 and the 17-55 +70-200 but I'm with you on wanting a d3 :s

i think the 2.5k is whats expendable at the moment.

Right then.

In a moment of madness I'm going for a D3 + 50 1.8. Not the best of lenses but it's a start, nearly got enough money for a 28-70 2.8 which I'll get when I can afford it.

Anyhow, I'm kind of relaxing the whole press photography thing for a few months due to prelims and real exams which are obviously very important!
