I have decided my useful but not quite good enough 70-300 4-5.6 USM zoom is going to be replaced by a shiny new 70-200F4 IS L USM lens and probably a 1.4 TCVR.

I am trying to work out if I will also need a new bag but am having trouble making a comparison using the data on the Canon website.

They quote the length of the lenses minus caps and filter.

Could some kind soul with a 70-200 L please stand it on end and measure the overall length from the rear of lens cap to the top of the lens cap (if a filter is fitted please state).

And could you please measure the maximum diameter of the lens hood.

Many thanks in advance

David

(soon to be L lens owner :D)

Quick bump so it doesn't get lost.

Well google the lens and Canon say its.Max. diameter x length (mm) 76 x 172 for a NON IS as I think its only the 2.8 that has IS.
SO I am guess that what it is
And a 1.4 is
Max. diameter x length (mm)72.8 x 27.2
They do an F4 with IS too. Canon do 4 70-200mm models

Hoppy, do you ever sleep?

Just got mine last week, cracking lens in every way. With either the Canon or Kenko Pro 1.4x TC attached you have a 280mm F5.6 at the long end - and a very sharp one at that. My old 70-300 IS couldn't hold a candle to it wide open. You can also stack these 2 TCs, and mine still retains fast and accurate AF on my 5D II. That's 392mm - and very comparable to the 100-400L at 400mm which I've just sold, because the 70-200 F4 IS is such a sharp lens to start with - the perfect 'baseline' for 1 or more TCs.

I've been doing my research as well in the 70-200 f4 IS... looks like a good lens to me.

aprox £100 more for the f2.8 non IS from Kerso, just trying to decide what to do!

If the IS is good for 3 to 4 stops then it will have the edge over the f2.8 non IS, DOF at f4 at 70-200mm will still be good as well.

Think I'll be going for the f4 IS!

I hate making choices like this!!

... but only if your subject is stationary. If you're trying to shoot somthing that's moving, then IS doesn't help and you need a fast shutter speed - in which case the f/2.8 non-IS lens has the edge.

I haven't made it any easier, have I? ;)

Just to update this thread, my shiny new 70-200 F4L IS USM arrived Saturday morning and Sunday I went out in the most appalling light I have seen for ages to try it out.

Don't know if it's my increasing familiarity with the 40D or the lens or both but I was very impressed from my brief play. Play was eventually stopped by the rain as I thought it a bit much to try out the weather sealing on it's first outing - and of course the 40D isn't sealed at all really.

The only problem is next weekend I am going to visit a friend who has a 7D, I think this lens on a 7D might make me want one of those to.

Wish me luck.

David

PS anyone want to buy a carefully used 70-300?
