Direct uploads to forum?

I have noticed that direct uploads to the forum tend to be lacklustre and dull , whereas hosted photos from Flickr tend to be fully vibrant . Does any admin have a answer to this .
Also I have noticed that some uploads from Flickr by various members only display a partial image ? Again any answers to this I.e is there a size limit to hosted photos ?
