I had an old broken Pentax 28-80 AF that I took apart just for the hell of it. No intention of getting it repaired, and I thought that if I didn't get it back together I could use the elements for something weird (photographically speaking). I'm an engineer by job and I'm no stranger to taking things apart and putting them back together (with nothing left over). It wasn't a lens that could be disassembled from the front, and everything had to come off from the mount end.
It started off well, with the bayonet mount coming off ok, then another bit, all straightforward and easy to remember. But when I took another ring section off, out on to the table poured a mass of springs, balls, and plastic bits. And absolutely no hope of working out where they had come from. It was all downhill from there. The cylindrical cams for the zoom mechanism would also have been a pig to put back together properly.
So I got some nice lenses to play with, and also made a decent magnifying loupe from one of the internal cylinders and elements.
