Just got my new 1920 x 1200 monitor up and running but I cannot change the res from 1280 x 1024.

System XP sp3
Video driver is NVIDIA GeForce 7800 GT (have latest driver)

The card should be capable of supporting 1920 x 1200 and indeed it is noted as 1920 x 1200 (native) in the NVIDIA control panel but I cannot change it up or down from 1280 x 1024. I did a quick web search and this seems a fairly common problem but I could not find a definite fix. Has anyone got any idea what is going on?

BTW the same thing happened with my old CRT.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Under control panel under equipment what is the monitor? You need to make sure that it is being detected as the correct monitor as if it isn't then you might find that the monitor that it is being detected as might not be able to support that resolution.

Just had a look Darren and it is showing the correct monitor (Dell U2410). The display control panel and NVIDIA control panel both give the option of 1920 x 1200 and when you change it always reverts back to 1280 x 1024

OK, I would re-install the display drivers. Try booting in safe mode and uninstalling them, reboot and re-install them with the latest drivers.

I have updated the adapter driver earlier on today and the monitor driver has only been installed today. I cannot change the res up or down to any other res except 1280 x 1024. I have had this problem for months but with my old CRT it did not matter because 1280 x 1024 was fine.
When you say re-install the drivers do you mean graphics card and monitor?

YES both. Go into safe mode and un-install them THEN re-boot and re-install

When you say stuck 640*480 do you mean there are no other visible options to set the monitor display resolution to like 800x600, or 1024x768?
Or can you see the option but not move the slider?

You can see all the other options and you can move to them and click apply - it then asks if you want to keep these setting - answering yes but it just reverts back every time no matter what res you choose !! (this is driving me nuts in 640 x480 res :help: )

Click the link I sent you (posted above), it should take you straight to the download page and then click on Download button.

Go to start-settings-control panel-display-settings-screen resolution slider to alter to required screen size-click ok.

You can adjust from 800x600 min to 1280x1024 max

Thats the walk thru you need (((easy)))

I think the problem is the sceen is maybe too large to see all that the display settings show. Try moving the screen up on the side bar/or drag it up, to get at the bottom where the slider is.

If this doesn't work Check the DPI setting in advanced. Should read Normal size 96 DPI in the box

No I can see all the options. please read the thread from the beginning and all will be clear.

If you had a duff graphics card you wouldn't get anything on the screen, check my last post. When you altered the settings on the slider did you click APPLY then OK?

Or just OK which won't work

Sure did, I have done this a thousand times as I used to be a IT manager. By the way the res options you get is reliant upon the graphics adaptor that you use - the fact that yours only goes up to 1280 x 1024 is down to your particular graphics card and or monitor.

Many a time I have only clicked OK and not apply first, then scratched my head as to why the settings won't alter, so your not the only one it makes 2 of us.

I have clicked Apply and OK at least 100 times today - The res just will not change - I am now convinced that it is the Graphics card

Have you tried system restore back to when you had the old monitor? It might just jog the display program to work properly?

I HAVE NOW CRACKED IT by UN-INSTALLING spyware doctor.
Just read a thread on anther forum where someone done this so I tried - just re-booted and I was right it 1920 x 1200 res without doing a thing.

Thanks for your help guys.

Yep Darren , who the hell would have though that - I was dead luckily to stumble on this, another 10 minutes and I would have called it a day and bought another graphics card tomorrow - thanks again for your help.

No problem, it makes a change sorting a PC by remote control :)

Well done, I've seen an issue before where the native resolution of the monitor is not listed on the slider bar. This issue has to do with the graphics card driver being out of date.

Apart from that I was getting a bit stuck as I have not used XP in over a year now and cannot remember how to get to some of the system windows - Windows 7 is sooooooo much nicer

At least you can now view XP in all of its 1920x1200 glory.

Cheers

Steve, the resolution were all listed on the slider bar inc 1920 x 1200. The trouble was that after you selected any res and applied it, it then reverted back and would not change - I was stuck on one res and there was no way of changing. Turned out it was all because of Spyware Doctor - even thought Spyware Doctor was not even active or running it stopped you changing the res. All I did was un -install Spyware Doctor and Bingo, everything was back to normal.
