Distortion on video and flickering lights (Nikon D90)

Hi all,

I've been using the D90 to capture some 'after footage' of my jobs upon completion (I'm a vehicle detailer) but appear to be struggling with a few things

Firstly, 'strobe' flickering - caused by my fluorescent strip lights?

See Rolls Royce highlights video: http://youtu.be/AhQdnowk8kU?hd=1

and more recently, distortion in cetain areas.

See recent BMW highlights video (distortion starts @ 11s mark) http://youtu.be/05XontPjw8Q?hd=1

Can anyone help here? Work out what could cause the distortion and a way around the flickering lights? (lens? new filter?)

Any help much appreciated.

Thanks, Jim

The flickering lights can only be solved by a change of shutter speed ;)

The distortion actually looks like a codec/compression issue, what settings were you shooting with and what format did you output it in?

ah, great.. OK thanks

If I remember correctly, shooting in full manual mode (I forget what aperture/shutter speed; isn't it auto on d90?) and a little unsure of compression/codec choice. H.246 I believe with Youtube widescreen HD default settings.

For uploading to the likes of YouTube, is there a 'best' setting to chose?! I read somewhere that 'FLV' was a good one, with custom dimensions etc.

It's not auto IIRC ;) I can dig out a full list of settings export settings on monday if you want them but what i use is VERY close to the Vimeo recommended ;)

Are you shooting at 30 fps? The lighting is at 50, so 25 will work better.

As for the codec artefacts, it's caused by the quick light change. The quantiser can't change fast enough.

Is it possible for you to put the unedited camera output somewhere? I could have a look some time.
