Hello just seen this on a thread

Divide by crop factor to get the APS-C equivalents

and wondered what it meant

can someone explain?

with regards to 35mm equivalent?

400mm lens on a 1.6x crop body = 640mm
400mm lens on a 1.3x crop body = 520mm
400mm lens on a full frame body = 400mm

1.3x crop body is 1d etc
1.6x crop body is 30/40/50d etc
full frame is 1ds/5d/5d2
 
APS-C is the sensor size used in the majority of digital single lens reflex cameras (dSLR).

To compare the magnification of a lens to how it would perform on a 35mm full frame SLR, you multiply by the crop factor (1.5), so a 50mm lens on a dSLR is equivalent to a 75mm lens on 35mm full frame. This gives photographers moving from 35mm film a handle on what they can expect from APS-C digital.

Your example is going the other way: someone explaining what would give a roughly equivalent effect to his film shots.

1.54× — Pentax K20D
1.53× — Pentax *istD, Pentax *istDs, Pentax *istDs2, Pentax *istDL, Pentax *istDL2, Pentax K100D, Pentax K100D Super, Pentax K10D, Pentax K200D
1.5× — all Nikon DSLR cameras except the D3, D3x and D700; all Fuji, Sony (except for the a900), and Konica Minolta DSLR cameras.
1.3× — Canon EOS-1D Mark III, 1D Mark II (and Mark II N), EOS-1D, Kodak DCS 460

A 1.3× Focal Length Multiplier is also known as APS-H. Actual multiplier factor is 1.25x, though commonly referred to as 1.3x
 
make some sense but i guess as anew dlsr owner i wont really touch up on that, would i?
 
Nope, it won't effect you unless you need to think about other formats and how lenses on the other systems relate to yours.

Sort of, the figures above relate to the field of view, a 400mm lens is a 400mm lens regardless of whether it's on a crop or full-frame body...
 
Now Flash, you will have some wise one telling you that a prime lens magically changes its AOV depending on the body it is on.
