Know this has been done before, but has anyone made their own little gadget or got a money saving tip

Start with mine, I lost one of the rubber feet from my old round leg Manfrotto 055CB Tripod.
Got some rather fine new ones that are sold as walking stick ends in my local hardware shop (perfect fit too) for the grand sum of £1.05 for all three

the problem with your photo's the slow shutter speed, you should have used a tripod

Shaky hands and my daughters compact are not a good combo, but you get the idea :)
 
Quick tip.

Can't afford a tripod? Tired of flakey shakey pictures? Want to save money? Then you need STRINGPOD. The answer to all your wobbly shots is STRINGPOD. STRINGPOD's unpatented design will cure all your needs. Simply tie one end of STRINGPOD to the bottom of your camera's screw lock and make a loop on the other end. Place your foot in the looped end and pull camera to eye level making sure the string is taught. You now have a steady cam.

A piece of black foam from a craft shop, combined with a home-made velcro strap, will make a very good sun shade for a lens AND can also double as a snoot for your flash.
