After a lifetime of film, I recently converted to digital and have found a problem using Cokin filters on my Sony A330 DSLR.

Many of my shots are landscapes, seascapes or cloudscapes and I want to use a Cokin A121S ND8 Gradual Grey (soft) filter to balance sky and foreground.

Problem is that after I set up the shot and press the trigger, the AF kicks in for a final check and skews the filter out of the vertical plane.

What am I doing wrong? [I guess my alternative option is to go to MF and/or use a remote trigger- not tried these yet!]

Help!

Thanks

The 18-55mm kit lens rotates during focus so that graduated filter will not work correctly with it. One way around I'd say is to focus first and then set the grad up and shoot but apart from that there's nowt you can do about it I'm afraid.

Have a look at the back of the filter holder. At the bottom you should see a little square sticking out. If you break that off then you will be able to rest a finger on the holder when focusing and the filter holder will not rotate.

That is not very clear so you may want to have a look at the new Cokin brochure on the Cokin site, page 23. Autofocus Rotation.

Use auto focus and then switch to manual when you are happy with all settings then nothing will turn when you take the photo.

Not sure if you can use another button to auto focus on the sony, if you can then you could auto focus then fit filter and take shot with the shutter button with no need to use the autofocus button.

Thanks for all the prompt replies folks- I will try them.

Cheers

No nipple at bottom of holder to allow free rotation!

However experimenting with the camera/holder, I find that if I do not tighten the fitting ring up too much, I can get limited free rotation with AF.

Cheers
