Do i buy new or go for a good old second hand

Hi

Having just sold my Lumix G1 and lenses i've got £500 to spend. For now im only looking at a body and kit lens or maybe a 50mm. Do i get a 550/600d or go for a 40d. Most of my photography is buildings/landscape and the odd bit of portrait work. While im here, is the 17-55 kit lens on the 550/600 ok for a walkabout lens.
 
you can get 2nd hand 50d's for £500

I'm looking for a 50D too!
 
There seems to be very little sense in buying new. Buy from a good shop like Harrisons and you'll get 12 months warranty for only slightly more than ebay etc.

I'm surprised to hear that you're going up in size. It seems to be that the trend is to move from DSLRs towards mirrorless offerings, given the bodies are so much smaller and you can get a crop sensor in them these days!
 
Few 50D's for sale on MPB Photographic slightsly over the £500 mark. Probably be able to pick up a nice lens too.

But if it's a 40D your after about £370 will net you one with £130 left for a lens. Probably get something slightly better than an 18-55 kit lens then.

The main problem i had is the size, i have massive hands and when holding the G1 i used to have 2 fingers flapping about doing nothing. I did look at the G3 but the grip put me off. Also, i tended to use legacy glass and the longer reaching stuff just didn't feel right to me.
 
The 550D and 600D are both very good cameras capable of taking excellent photos, but they aren't very big. I put a grip on my 550D and I found it fitted very well in my hands, which aren't small either, but the 7D fits a whole lot better and with a grip on it's perfect. The 40D and 50D should be about the same size as the 7D so will probably be more suitable. MPB have lots of 40D from around £350 and 50D from around £500 for just the body but if you push your budget for a kit lens and 50D it will be a great setup to start off with.
 
Another vote for used 40D, however, of you're going to be taking architectural images I wouldn't go for the 50mm lens, it will probably be too long on a cropped sensor.
 
Thanks for all the replies, as i said i now have a new 600d with grip (£430) on its way to me and im looking for a lens. Tempted by the Tamron 17-50, is there any difference between the non vc and vc versions?
 
Yes, the non VC is sharper than the VC. Only notice the different if you pixel peep .....

A used non VC one should be quite cheap.
