Do I go to hell for......

if you can get it cheap and sell it on for little/no loss, what's the harm?
 
I must admit I don't see the point of buying a £2000 21MP camera and putting a piece of glass like that in front of it. It doesn't feel like a step forward.
 
You might not go to hell, that is a bit extreme

But expect just a little pointing and laughing :p

At least it's got a metal mount. Putting on a 50mm f/1.8 would be the worst sin :nono:

I feel a bit guilty about using a 50mm f/1.4 on my 5D mk II.. it deserves L glass all the way!

I once put my 50/1.8 onto my 1D3. I've never seen the little thing look so perky. The AF worked quite well. I never told anybody, though, and I've now sold the lens on. Can we keep it our secret?

I would say you would be better off with the 24-70mm f2.8L being full frame, that will match well with your current lenses. If you feel that you want to go wider then maybe the 16-35mm f2,8L
 
well 24-70 vs 17-40 will be a decision for a later time, I'll have a lot more feel for focal lengths on ff once I've been using it a few months

I know what you're saying stewart but I straight up can't afford to buy L right now but will be able to soon.....

Next time you are coming up the M5 give me a shout I can at least give you the chance to play with both the lenses I recommended

I'd have absolutely no qualms about mounting a 28mm f/2.8 on a D700 or D3, so what's the problem with Canon fast primes, are they shid or something...:thinking:
 
It's not the first WA prime I'd have thought of... but why not? It'll do the job, won't cost a fortune, and you'll probably get 70% of the cost back when you can afford something better.

Or if you want to spend even less and quite possibly get better quality as well... have a look at some of the manual focus lenses out there and an adapter for the body. Sometimes it's more about putting the fun back into it than anything else.

cos the canon 28/1.8 is meant to be good this is 50/1.8 money

I have changed my mind and been swayed by a temptress with a 15-30, so I'll be experimenting on that for now :D

... but they're only 12MP cameras. The 5D Mk II the OP is thinking of getting has 21MP. It demands better lenses.

but its a short term bodge till I get L glass, I understand the limitations. Also the 21MP thing means a lot at 100% but for normal crops and prints it doesn't
 
I use the 28 2.8 a fair bit, and generally slides look pretty good under a loupe or projected. It's not a 24 1.4L, but if it's that or no wide angle then why not? For the money it's not a bad bit of kit at all.

I see you say Exeter Uni, are you at Tremough campus? If so you're welcome to borrow it and give it a go.
