Hi all,
Just going through my photo's from today and it seems as I have a focus problem with my Sigma 70-200 f2.8, in all the photo's I either focused on the number or the helmet but as can be seen in these 3 shots the kart behind seems sharper.
Any suggestions please
Alan

How quickly are the carts moving...Maybe the one behind moves into the point where you had focussed?

seem to recall a similar prob and the answer was the AF mode selection was wrong - and the focus point should be set to follow the action

bit vague but dont know the D300

can your software reveal the focus point?

Alan, I think what Tina and John are eluding to is: were you using a single shot focussing mode instead of a continuous focus mode ?

contiuous focus mode

Used when photographing a moving subject especially fast moving. If on single shot mode by the time you have pressed the shutter from focus lock the subject will have moved especially a fast moving one and made worse if using f2.8. Continuous focus mode will track the subject.

I have read on here about len's front or back focusing would this be my problem?

Hi Rhonddaboy,

Front and back focusing issues will occur with static subjects as well as moving so if focus is ok on statics you should be able to discount that.

I don't know the D300 but if you're not panning has the subject moved out of the focus point so the lens is refocusing on the next cart moving into the focus point? Or is the D300 intelligent enough to follow a subject wherever it goes once you've focused on it? If the latter I don't know.

Alan,

As the carts are coming towards you as well as crossing your view from left to right is it possible that the lens can't focus fast enough to track them properly?

I don't have experience of the Siggy 70-200 but my Siggy 70-300 struggles in these conditions.

Were you using 3D tracking mode?

Hi all
Sorry for the late repliy as I have been down to Devon today to pick my grandson up for a holiday in gods country.
It has not happened in every shot, about 20 out of 360. I don't use 3D tracking as I have read on here that it's not that good.
At the next meeting I am going to swap lens's with Digitall to see if its a lens problem or me.

Alan
