Do I need another lens?

I am off to the Masai Mara in September and was after some lens advice.

I was planning on taking a nikkor 35mm 1.8 and a sigma 50-500, but had a few concerns over the amount of light on the morning/evening game drives along with being limited to a minimum of 35mm.

With this in mind I have been looking at something like the sigma 17-50 2.8 and leaving the 35mm at home. Is it worth getting another lens or should I be fine with the 35mm?

Hi Keith, welcome to TP.

I'd say the major consideration is the need to avoid changing lenses as much as possible. With that in mind, I thing a 17-50mm f2.8 is quite a good idea if you foresee using that short a focal length. Just as a side point, the Tamron non VC version of this lens always appears highly rated and may well be worth a look at over the sigma.

I think you would find a short f2.8 zoom more useful than the 35mm f1.8. For views and animalscapes its probable that you wouldn't shoot the 35mm wide open anyway, I think a short zoom and the sigma 50-500 is an excellent combination and will cover most things
