Hi all I'm looking for a new lens for motorsport (bikes) and have been looking at the sigma 120-300 F4 or the sigma 120-400 F4.5/5.6 os. I have seen some great shots with the 120-300 but there of birds so not sure if it will be as good for motorsport and should I go for one with I/S. Lens is to go on a 40d also I'v seen the sigma 120-300 F4 for sale with a 1.4x converter for £450. ???

No, IS won't help it if your subject is moving 100mph. You need a fast shutter for that anyway.
 
Oky doke would you recommend ether of these len's. Or should I be looking more to a f2.8. Thanks
 
But IS will help if you do panning shots of the bikes and riders, there is no 120-300mm f/4 by the way, there is a 120-300mm f/2.8 or 100-300mm f/4

If you can afford it always go for the faster glass, the 120-300mm f/2.8 is a great lens and you can also add the 1.4x for extra reach giving you a 168-420mm f/4

No, you don't want a fast shutter speed, not unless you want your pictures to look as if the car is parked. If that is your desire then you may as well shoot parked cars - it's much easier. If you want to make the images look more dynamic, just tilt the image of the parked car.

Moving cars really need to be photographed at relatively low shutter speeds, panning to get the car sharp and the background blurred. That way the car does look as if it's actually moving. If a lens has Mode 2 IS then the panning is much easier.
