Do I really need 100mm filters?

Having tried some landscape work at the weekend and actually enjoyed it cuckoo I am contemplating getting some proper filters.

Question is do I really need a 100mm filter holder and the increased costs that go with it, or will a 84mm P sized set be okay?

Currently I only have small cheap lenses (52mm) thread so currently I am ok with even an A size, but looking forward I fancy the sigma 24-70 HSM (82mm) which is the limit of the P holder.

By going P sized I save £30-40 in the holder alone, and that's before you start to add the filters and adapter rings which are about 60-70% of the cost of the 100mm equivalents.

My primary interest is in the big stopper/prostop and a grad or 2.

The good thing with filters is you'll not lose too much if you sell them on if you decide to upgrade.

I went from P series, to Cokin Z Pro to Lee and didn't lose much en-route.

I think the main driver for people going to the 100mm systems is for when using wide angle lenses. If your filter holder is too small, the holder will either appear in shot or cause significant vignetting. I think you'd you be pretty safe at 24mm though if that is wide as you're ever likely to go.
