Do I sell my 40D now I have a 5Dc!

Hi All,

I'm in a bit of a pickle, I recently bought a 5D Classic, and love it, and now have a 24-105 L, and to me its now the perfect combination. Now I'm undecided whether to keep my 40D with all my EF-S lenses, or sell them :thinking:. I've not used it since I got the 5D, a month or 2 ago.

I shoot mainly portraits, photo's of our boy's and special occasions.

Any help in making my decision would be great :thumbs:

I would say wait a while, unless you need the cash. You may find your photography interests expand as time goes on and a crop frame camera is very handy should you need its extra reach.
 
I have a 5D MkII and am on the look out for a 40D body so I would say keep it and maybe sell the lenses if you feel you are duplicating.
 
I'd say, unless financiers dictate, then keep hold of the 40D. It's a faster FPS and the crop factor could be of use at some point. It owes you nothing and would give you a 2nd body for shooting with a different focal length lens on.

I've been recently going through a similar thought process if I was to buy a 5D rather than maybe a 7D, should I keep my 40D
 
Thanks everyone :). I only thought about selling was to free up some cash, but I agree the faster FPS and extra reach being a cropped sensor is the only reason I'd keep it. My thoughts are now to keep the 40D with just a telephoto lens, maybe keeping my 55-250 IS, its a pretty good copy. I'd then have the 5D with 24-105 would have the wide end to short tele end sorted, and the 40D with the 55-250 (88 - 400) would cover the rest. I also have a 50 1.8 that I use on the 5D for low light shots, works really well. I can then sell all the other lenses. I do notice the amount of reach you do loose with a FF body !
 
I use my 5D MKII with the 24-105L and keep my "old" 550 attached to a 70-200 F2.8L. This combination covers almost every eventuality for my type of photography.
 
Yeh, would be my ideal setup. Wish I had'nt sold my 450D recently, and sold the 40D, with the later being heavier, and 450 with a tele lens being a lighter combo
 
I'd sell the crop and buy another lens, you already said you don't use it, a lens will be used and will also hold its value.
 
Personally I'm with twist on this. Only you know how much you'd actually use it. If you intend on shooting wildlife, sports or airshows for example, th extra reach of the crop will be more than useful. BUT, if this will be very rare, then I would look to move it on and get a lens you will use often on the FF. I have a 40D which I've just sold for that very reason. As much as I love it, it has only been used once in the last 4 months - and that was for an airshow I attend once a year.

But that's just me ;)
 
I appreciate your input :-). That is my dilemma, I'd only use the 40D a few times a year at most, but then again I may use it more, but can't honestly see it. Its a case of keeping it just in case! But its slot of money including my efs lenses.for a just in case
 
I'd sell it as well - put the money towards another lens...

Week by week the 40 will be slowly dropping in value...

Whereas a good second hand lens will remain the same value (maybe even increase) as time goes on...

If you don't use it - don't keep it. Let someone else have the pleasure :)
 
If you are charging any money at all for the portraits you take - keep it. You need to have a backup body incase your main body goes wrong/gets dropped on a job.
 
I'd say that just buy asking your unsure, so keep it until your sure you want to sell otherwise you'll just regret it. Then a few months down the line you'll be looking at crop bodies to buy, and wishing you'd kept old faithful.

I like to have a regular clear out of all my 'stuff' ; photography, books, dvds, clothes ect. about once a year. If I haven't used something it normally goes on sale or to charity, unless I'm quite attached to it, then it waits until next year.

I'm having a clear out now actually, and trying to decide what to sell a 400d and kit lens for.
 
I'd also suggest keeping it! There have been a few times when I've been glad to have my 20D to go back to.

One thing to think about is if you're going to want to do really long exposures or time lapses maybe keep the kit lens, I regret selling mine. Other than that I'd suggest eventually moving to all EF lenses, that way you get different uses from each lens depending on what body you use!
 
Thanks for all your input, am more confused now then I was when I first posted ! Lol, but I reckon if I don't use it with in the next 2 months I'll sell it.
 
I had a 550D and went up to a 7D, with the intention of keeping the 550D as backup. Then a month later I decided to get a 5D2 and keep the 7D as backup and passed on the 550D to the wife as I couldn't fit it in my bag. I wouldn't go anywhere important knowing I would be taking photos without taking a backup just in case. I've only taken about 400 shots on the 7D since I got the 5D2 but I wouldn't part with it.
