Do SLR sized camera pouches exist?

Yes
Basically, I'm in need of something to protect my 500D+lens attatched whilst I carry it around in my every day leather satchel when I'm out doing street photography, as oppossed to carrying my proper camera bag + gear. It fits in perfectly as it is - but that would mean it'd be loose and getting bashed about with no proper support.

I know it's hard to gauge how big it'd need to be based on what lens is attatched, but generally if I'm going out without my full camera gear, I'll only be using an all-round lens (currently the kit lens).

Alternatively I'm thinking I could just wrap it up in an old t-shirt or bubble wrap whilst it's in my bag. :)

Yes, have a look at www.speedgraphic.co.uk
On page 82 of their paper catalogue they list "Optech" neoprene pouches in various sizes, you should find them somewhere on their website.
Hope this helps.

I have a small shoulder bag, have a look at the crumpler range. If you only want to carry your camera, there'll be additional space for wallet, keys etc, or when you (inevitably ;) ) want to take another lens, there's room for expansion. Just my views though :)

Something like this?

They do several sizes for longer zoom lenses.

I bobbed round to Jessops this afternoon and had a look at the Lowepro ones, but they're just too bulky still, too many side unecessary side pockets and attatchments which are a bit useless when it'll be in my bag anyway.

This one is looking more like the kind of thing I'm after, not too much added bulk.

That's also a good option which I hadn't thought of. I had generally assumed all camera bags were rucksack type ones, but this certainly proves otherwise! However, it is rather pricey.. :(

Thanks for all your help everyone, really appreciate it, for now I'm going to keep an eye on the ones from speedgraphic as they look the most ideal, however the size that I think will work is currently out of stock. :(

Try this
Made to measure for a XXXD body with kit lens - couldn't be more perfect a fit. The next size up TLZ20 will accomodate a bigger lens, such as a 17-40 or 70-300 for example.

I'm looking for a neoprene camera pouch that'll fit a 5d mark ii and a 24-70. Anyone know if such a thing exists?

It's a 500D, not the 50D. :( I'm scared of the plastic casing springing out on the very first knock.

:D

Should be fine still. My 450D still hasn't phoned the domestic abuse helpline and it's alive. In fact I think if anything the lenses are more delicate. I go urbexing with it and everything, that means getting covered in pidgeon crap, mud, dust, bumping it about, bumping it off things (gently mind you) and allsorts... My mate managed to bounce a 450D across a car park and it still lived too. Got scars to show it :D

I used to carry my EOS 300v (similar size and build to a 400D) in my handbag along with my 75-300mm lens in amongst all the usual rubbish us girls carry with us!

TBH it should be fine, providing you don't throw your bag around. Maybe keep your keys seperate to the camera too. If you are still wary, wrap it in a scarf or something. (Last winter, Aldi sold a fleece tube scarf thing, which would be ideal - can get them here too - http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/-BLACK-POLAR-FLEECE-THERMAL-NECK-WARMER-%2f-TUBE-%2f-SCARF_W0QQitemZ330415542346QQcmdZViewItem?rvr_id=&rvr_id=&cguid=e650be7911f0a0aad464d324ffbff432 )

Alternatively, what about something like camera armour : http://www.warehouseexpress.com/buy-camera-armor-for-canon-eos-450d-black/p1028253 and a screen protector.

I used to use a Tamrac zoom 4 when walking instead of my backpack although it was all black.
Fitted a bridge camera or 30d+17-85 or d300+16-85

You could also take a look at the Think Tank Digital Holser series (the 20 fits my D90 with 18-105 lens).

I use an Optech D-midsize for my D90 for just the reason you mention - just chuck it into any bag.
The largest lens I can get into that on my D90 is a 16-85mm/ Tokina 11-16. Bit of a stretch on these, but then it is neoprene. Easy fit with Tamron 17-50, 50mm, 35mm f1.8s. Great idea.

Got mine at Morris. Recently tried at SRS - long wait.
