The Canon teleconverters are expensive (£225 for a 1.4X) and fit only a limited range of canon's own EF lenses. The Kenko Pro 300 DG teleconverters are significantly cheaper (£100), offer very similar IQ and fit, as far as I know, all of Canon's EF lenses. I doubt that any teleconvrter will work with EF-S lenses due to the short backfocus design which means that the back of the lens extends into the camera body. If you stick a teleconverter, which is full of glass, in the way I suspect there will be a very real physical problem.
Don't forget that when you add a teleconverter to an f/5.6 lens you will lose AF on a 30D or any xxD camera. You can tape over some pins on the teleconverter to mask the teleconverter from the camera so it attempts to AF but the results may not be very good.
