The best advice that I can think to give on this subject is to be bold and just do some photography as you chose, after the first time if everything goes well you will wonder why you found it so difficult. 
I use to have this issue but after doing wedding photography I realised that people are not on the whole bothered and the ones that are you can spot a mile off.
I realise that wedding photography and street photography are completely different but I can assure you people on the whole will react in the same way, for the most part they will ignore you. You will find with street photography their busy life will be preoccupying their minds and the last thing they will expect is a random person to be pointing a camera lens at them in the street.
There will always be the exception to the rule though as with everything in life. Keep safety in mind though and if someone does get upset just walk away.
